Civil Sexual Assault Case Against Conor McGregor Set to Move Forward in Florida

According to a report from The Independent, the civil sexual assault lawsuit against MMA superstar Conor McGregor will move forward in Florida. The lawsuit is related to a 2023 incident that allegedly happened during an NBA finals game in Miami. Here, our West Palm Beach sexual assault and battery lawyer discusses the key things that you should know about the case.
Background: An Overview of the Allegations Against Conor McGregor
In June of 2023, during Game 4 of the NBA Finals at the Kaseya Center in Miami, a 49‑year‑old Wall Street executive accused Conor McGregor of sexual assault in a bathroom stall. She alleged that McGregor, who was intoxicated, forcibly led her into a stall with help from an associate. The complaint states he then held her against a wall, placed her in an armlock, and made “unwanted sexual contact” without her consent. That is a serious crime in Florida.
Miami–Dade prosecutors reviewed video footage and interviewed witnesses in October of 2023. However, they ultimately decided not to press criminal charges on the grounds that there was not sufficient evidence. Though, that does not mean that the case ended. The alleged victim filed a civil sexual assault lawsuit on January 15th, 2025. She sued Mr. McGregor, the Miami Heat, and the Kaseya Center (the arena).
An Update: Civil Sexual Assault Case Moving Forward in Florida
Conor McGregor has agreed to waive the formal international service via summons. His attorney, Barbara Llanes, filed a waiver in the Southern District Court of Florida (Miami Division) on July 14th, meaning McGregor no longer needs to be formally served in Ireland. As a consequence of that filing, he now has 90 days to file a formal response or motion concerning the sexual battery claims. By signing the waiver, Llanes also accepted that McGregor must now file an answer or motion addressing the sexual battery claims within 90 days. If no response is received, a default judgment in favor of the plaintiff may be entered. Notably, the legal team for the plaintiff attempted service in both the U.S. and Ireland under the Hague Convention but was not successful.
Waiving Service Does Not Mean a Settlement is Coming (At Least in Every Case)
When a defendant waives formal service in a civil case like this, it does not necessarily mean a settlement is coming, but it can be a strategic move that reveals some things about how the defense is approaching the case. They may be trying to buy favor with the court or they may be trying to get some additional time to build a defense. However, a waiver of service also sometimes precedes a settlement agreement between the parties. As of July of 2025, the civil sexual assault case against Mr. McGregor is still pending. The defense denies any wrongdoing.
