Jacksonville Police Believe that Have Caught Serial Rapist After Two Decades

According to a report from The Florida Times-Union, the Jacksonville Police Department believes that it has finally caught a serial rapist after more than 25 years. Jason Leonard Blount, a 52-year-old man, was arrested and charged with multiple counts of sexual battery. DNA evidence was key in the arrest. Mr. Blount is being held on $750,000 bail. Arrest Made in Sexual Assault Case After 25 Years 

As confirmed in reporting by The Florida Times-Union, local law enforcement in Jacksonville believe that they have finally apprehended a man suspected of a series of brutal sexual assaults more than two decades ago. In early July of 2025, 52‑year‑old Jason Leonard Blount of Orlando was arrested on unrelated robbery charges in Orange County. During booking, the DNA for Mr. Blount matched evidence preserved from three unsolved North Florida sexual assault cold cases dating from between 2000 and 2002.

These were violent attacks. Investigators say the suspect, who was now identified with DNA evidence as Mr. Blount, ambushed female victims outside their homes. At least one victim was attacked while she was jogging. Another victim was dragged from her apartment. One victim was elderly and has since died. Notably, there is no reason to believe that police have DNA evidence from all attacks committed that are believed to have been committed by Mr. Blount. Law enforcement suspects there could be additional survivors in Jacksonville, Orlando, and elsewhere in Florida.

Note: Jason Leonard Blount has been charged with three counts of felony sexual battery. Though the DNA evidence is highly compelling, he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

 Justice was Delayed, But it is Still Needed for Victims 

Unfortunately, it took many years for the suspected attacker to be caught in this case. Justice was delayed, but it is still urgently needed for the women whose lives were forever changed by these attacks. Survivors have carried the weight of these violent crimes for over two decades. Some victims carry that weight in silence, some in fear, and some without the chance to see accountability in their lifetime. While the arrest cannot undo the trauma, it represents an important step toward healing and recognition. Police are now working to identify any additional victims.
