Joint Funeral Held for the Victims of the Terrible Illegal Florida Turnpike U-Turn Truck Accident

Edited Firm photo for website

On October 5th, 2025, the Miami Herald reported that a joint funeral was held for the heartbreaking Florida Turnpike semi-truck crash that took the lives of three people. The collision was caused by a trucker making an illegal u-turn. The deadly incident made national headlines and the truck driver was arrested and is facing serious felony criminal charges. Here, our Miami Florida Turnpike accident attorney discusses the crash.

Background: Trucker in Florida Made Very Dangerous U-Turn to Cause Fatal Wreck

A semi-truck driver in Florida caused a deadly crash on the Florida Turnpike near Fort Pierce after attempting an illegal U-turn through an “Official Use Only” crossover. As the commercial truck completely blocked the northbound lanes, a minivan traveling at highway speed slammed into the trailer and, tragically, became wedged underneath. Two passengers were killed instantly, and a third died later at the hospital. The truck driver and his passenger were uninjured in the collision. Officers from the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) arrested the driver, who is now facing three felony counts of vehicular homicide. Investigators have called the crash reckless.

Joint Funeral for the Victims of the Horrific Crash

A joint funeral service was held for two victims of the Florida Turnpike crash at the Princeton Church of Nazarene in South Florida. The ceremony featured prayers in Creole and in English as well musical tributes, and a jazz procession as the caskets exited the church. Funeral expenses were covered by a $100,000 pledge from Sikhs for Justice. After the service, the victims were laid to rest at Palms Woodlawn Cemetery in Naranja in Miami-Dade County. Families, community leaders, and Haitian consulate representatives attended to pay respects.

Truck Driver Still Being Held, Awaiting Trial for Vehicular Homicide

The trucker who made the illegal, very dangerous u-turn (Harjinder Singh) is still being held while he awaits criminal trial. Mr. Singh is being held at the St. Lucie County Jail. Beyond the felony charges related to the crash, he is also facing immigration offenses. Indeed, there are some serious questions about whether or not he should have been able to hold a commercial driver’s license (CDL) at all. Mr. Singh has a CDL from Washington State, not from Florida. When tested after the crash, he was unable to identify the meaning of several common traffic signals. Notably, he waived his first appearance and entered a not-guilty plea. Prosecutors argue that Singh’s actions showed reckless disregard for life and violated multiple traffic safety laws. A pretrial docket call is expected soon. While most fatal truck accidents do not lead to criminal charges against the driver, the reality is that the conduct that is alleged in this case was especially reckless.
