Nonprofit Organizations Gives Florida an “F” Grade for Child Sexual Abuse Protections

Pike New

According to a report from Yahoo News, a nonprofit victims’ advocacy organization has given Florida an “F” grade for its lack of comprehensive protections for child sexual abuse victims. Notably, 45 other U.S. states also received a failing grade. Here, our West Palm Beach civil sexual assault lawyer provides a more comprehensive overview of the report, the problem, and the legal options for victims.

Florida’s Troubling “F” Grade Reflects Gaps in Protection

A recent national report from the World Childhood Foundation USA gave Florida an “F” for its overall response to child sexual abuse and exploitation. The grade highlights serious gaps in prevention capacity, survivor support funding, and justice system readiness. While Florida ranked relatively high for its legal safeguards, it fell sharply in areas such as consistent professional training, coordinated response, and long-term survivor assistance. Florida ranked 21st in the nation. Previously, the state was 9th best. That is an unfortunate fall. The drop from ninth to twenty-first place nationwide shows that passing strong laws is not enough. More resources are needed for the victims of child sexual abuse.

An Overview Florida’s Ongoing Efforts to Protect Children

Although Florida got a failing grade, the state is certainly not alone. As noted, only four states and the District of Columbia were not graded as “failing.” Further, our state is making some progress. Indeed, Florida is strengthening its laws and resources to prevent child abuse and exploitation. Recent legislation has expanded protections, increased penalties for those who harm children, and enhanced training for law enforcement officers. These steps build on earlier progress that created specialized programs for crimes against children and established trauma-informed investigation standards. The goal is clear: to protect every child, support every survivor, and ensure that justice is carried out with compassion. Still, gaps remain.

Supporting Survivors and Their Families

For survivors and their families, healing begins with safety, compassion, and access to the right resources. Florida’s network of Children’s Advocacy Centers (CACs) provides vital services, including medical evaluations, trauma-focused counseling, and coordination with investigators trained to minimize re-traumatization Survivors also have rights under state and federal law to pursue justice and financial support. Our law firm provides civil legal representation to the victims of child sexual abuse. We are prepared to bring a claim against the abuser as well as against any negligent third party, such as a business, organization, school, church, or even a government entity.
