Ramp Closed on Florida’s Turnpike After Truck Rollover Crash

West Palm Beach Business Litigation Attorney 2023-01-26 16-49-13

According to a report from Seven News Miami, a ramp was temporarily shut down on Florida’s Turnpike after a major tractor trailer rollover accident. The crash also halted traffic on a significant stretch of the Palmetto Expressway for several hours. Here, our West Palm Beach eighteen wheeler accident attorney explains what we know about the crash and the cause of the rollover.

Big Rollover Tractor Trailer Crash Reported on Florida’s Turnpike

There was a major eighteen wheeler accident reported on Florida’s Turnpike in South Florida. A rollover crash involving a dump truck brought traffic to a halt on northbound I-95. The incident happened right near the Golden Glades interchange. The semi-truck accident, which occurred on the ramp connecting northbound Interstate-95 (I-95) to the Turnpike and westbound Palmetto Expressway had disrupted traffic flow for several hours. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to the crash. They report that one person was injured.

Tractor Trailers Can Rollover (Often Bad Crashes)

The size and height center of gravity of large commercial trucks increase the risk of rollover accidents. Indeed, semis may roll over during sharp turns, sudden maneuvers, or even because of high winds. These crashes are often severe due to the vehicle’s size, weight, and momentum. There is a major risk of serious or even catastrophic injuries.

Tractor Trailer Rollovers are Largely Preventable

Although tractor trailer rollovers are among the most dangerous types of truck accidents, many of these crashes could and should have been prevented with the proper precautions. Indeed, most semi-truck rollover accidents happen because of negligence. Here are some of the leading causes:

  • Speeding: Speeding, especially around curves or exit ramps, is a leading factor in rollover crashes. Truckers who slow down are less likely to experience a roll over.
  • Driver Fatigue: Fatigued truckers are more likely to crash. There are hour of service (HOS) regulations that limit how much time a trucker can spend on the road.
  • Distracted Driving: A trucker needs to ensure that his or her full focus and attention is always on the road. Distracted driving is dangerous driving.
  • Poorly Loaded Cargo: A truck that is not properly loaded is also at a far higher risk of a rollover. Cargo can shift during travel.

The bottom line is that many serious commercial truck accidents should not have happened at all. With proper training, regular vehicle maintenance, and full compliance to safety protocols, trucking companies and drivers can significantly reduce the chances of a rollover.
