According to a report from WPTV, multiple serious injuries were reported after a box truck crash in Martin County. Local law enforcement officers note that the trucker’s reckless driving was the primary factor that caused the wreck. Here, our West Palm Beach semi-truck accident attorney provides an overview of the terrible crash.

Box Truck Involved in Serious Collision in Martin County, Florida

As confirmed by reporting from WPTV, a crash involving a box truck shut down the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 (Florida’s Turnpike) near the Hobe Sound exit in Martin County. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reported that the truck was traveling recklessly northbound around 7:35 a.m. when it hydroplaned on wet pavement, crossed the median, and collided with a southbound sedan before overturning. The box truck driver sustained critical injuries, while the sedan’s driver and passenger were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. While the crash is still under a more comprehensive investigation by police, the FHP cites the trucker “driving recklessly” as a cause.

Reckless Driving By Truck Drivers is Extremely Dangerous

Reckless driving by commercial truck operators poses a severe threat to public safety. Trucks can weigh more than 80,000 pounds when fully loaded, giving them far greater momentum and stopping distances than passenger vehicles. When a driver speeds, changes lanes abruptly, follows too closely, or drives aggressively, the consequences can be catastrophic.

Reckless driving is a term with a specific legal meaning in Florida. Under Florida Statutes §316.192, reckless driving is defined as operating a vehicle with willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property. For truck drivers, that standard applies not only to speeding or tailgating but also to violations of federal safety regulations, including hours-of-service limits and cargo securement rules under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR).

Seriously Injured in a Truck Accident? You Can File a Fault-Based Claim

Florida’s a no-fault state for truck accidents. However, you can file a fault-based claim directly against a negligent trucker or negligent truck company if you suffered a serious injury in a wreck. Victims have the right to seek compensation for the full extent of their damages. Along with other losses, you may be entitled to recover compensation for:

  • Vehicle repairs or replacement;
  • Ambulance costs and emergency room care;
  • Hospital bills and other health care costs;
  • Physical therapy and mental health counseling;
  • Pain and suffering and mental distress;
  • Long-term physical disability; and
  • Wrongful death of a family member.
