Tractor Trailer Catches On Fire on Turnpike in Broward County

Pike New

According to a report from Local 10 News, a tractor trailer recently caught fire and caused massive delays on the Florida Turnpike in Broward County. The crash happened in the southbound lanes near Tamarac. The truck driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle. It rolled over and caught fire. Another vehicle was also involved in the accident. Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported. The crash is still under a more comprehensive investigation. Here, our Miami truck accident attorney highlights the key things to know about truck crashes on the Turnpike in Florida.

What is Florida’s Turnpike?

 Florida’s Turnpike is a major toll highway that runs through much of the state of Florida. Officially known as Florida’s Turnpike Mainline, it’s a key part of the state’s toll road system and is operated by Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise, a division of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). It stretches across nearly 300 miles from Miami in South Florida up to Wildwood in Central Florida.

The Turnpike is a “Hot Spot” for Commercial Trucking Accidents

Unfortunately, a significant number of commercial truck accidents happen on Florida’s Turnpike. There is a high volume of commercial traffic using the route. Indeed, it is one of the busiest long-haul corridors in the state—so large trucks are common. Some of the highest risk areas for truck accidents are in South Florida, particularly near Miami-Dade County and Broward County.

 Truck Accidents Happen on Florida’s Turnpike for Many Reasons

Truck crashes can happen on the Turnpike for many different reasons—though, many of them could and should have been avoided with proper care. The leading causes of truck crashes on Florida’s Turnpike are similar to those seen on other high-speed, high-volume highways—but they are often amplified by the unique conditions of the Turnpike, including the long stretches of the highway and the consistent heavy traffic. Some major safety concerns include:

  • Fatigued driving;
  • Speeding;
  • Distracted driving;
  • Improper lane changes;
  • Tailgating; and
  • Mechanical failures.

Florida is a No-Fault State—But Not for Serious Truck Accidents on the Turnpike

Florida is a no-fault state for most car accidents, including many truck accidents. That means that drivers and other victims must often turn to their own Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage first—regardless of who caused the crash. However, the rule has important limits—especially when it comes to serious truck accidents on Florida’s Turnpike. Victims who suffer significant injuries—such as broken bones, permanent disability, or disfigurement—may step outside the no-fault system and file a claim directly against the at-fault party. You may have a claim against a negligent truck driver, negligent truck company, or other negligent party.
