Trump Administration Says Trucker Responsible for Deadly U-Turn Crash in Florida Was Undocumented

Pike New

Recently, a truck driver made a very dangerous, illegal turn on Florida’s Turnpike that caused a fatal crash. That trucker has a history of previous safety violations. According to a report from ABC News, the Trump Administration is asserting that he is an undocumented immigrant who should never have been granted a commercial driver’s license (CDL) in the first place. Here our Miami semi-truck accident attorney provides a more detailed overview of the incident and the aftermath.

Trucker Made Illegal U-Turn on Florida Turnpike (Caused Deadly Crash)

On August 12th, 2025, a truck driver named Harjinder Singh made an illegal U‑turn on Florida’s Turnpike near Fort Pierce. That extremely dangerous turn blocked the northbound lanes and caused a fatal T‑boning collision with a minivan. Tragically, all three occupants of the minivan died. Mr. Singh, who entered the U.S. illegally in 2018 and later obtained a commercial driver’s license in California, was unharmed. According to reports, he fled to California, where he was arrested and extradited back to Florida. He now faces three counts of vehicular homicide.

The Immigration Status of the Driver is a Big Political Issue

The immigration part of this case has raised some questions. Mr. Singh obtained a commercial driver’s license in California. That is a state that the Trump administration has lashed out at for its “sanctuary” policies and willingness to license undocumented drivers. The Trump administration has squarely blamed California’s policies for enabling Singh to drive commercially, with officials stating that sanctuary rules endanger the public.

Note: In Florida, undocumented drivers are not eligible for a CDL.

Truck Driver has a History of Safety Violations

Regardless of a person’s views on the immigration matters, there is no question that Mr. Singh has a history of alarming safety violations. Indeed, his CDL and employment record reveal serious safety lapses leading up to the fatal Florida crash. He held commercial driver’s licenses issued by Washington, California. However, he failed a post‑crash English proficiency test (answering only 2 of 12 correctly) and he failed to identify traffic signs (answering only 1 of 4 correctly).

Of course, it is certainly not just about the individual driver. Catastrophic truck accidents often have many breakdowns in safety. The employer in this case, White Hawk Carriers, also has a dismal safety profile. Over the past two years, FMCSA records show more than 80 violations, including nine unsafe‑driving violations, 19 hours‑of‑service breaches, false log reports, and cases of driving with suspended or disqualified licenses.
